This is the artifact of my learning on Andragogy, which can be viewed on this website or enlarged and viewed online. This PowerPoint presentation accompanied my literature review that looks at the relevance of Andragogy as applied in English as a Second Language programs around the world.

Andragogy & ESL; Friend or Foe
Course: Introduction to Adult Education and Higher Education
PowerPoint/Final Paper: Andragogy and ESL: Friend or Foe As an ESL teacher I was interested in researching how Andragogy was perceived and/or implemented in second language classes in various parts of the world. As well, research in this area gave me greater insight into the cultural issues affecting this style of teaching and learning in a global arena. Since much of my teaching has been in a variety of cultural settings around the globe, this research was highly relevant for my own teaching practice and as a citizen of the world. Additionally, this course introduced me to Paulo Freire's methods of adult literacy training and his ideas on 'conscientization, which as an educational method is similar in principle to that of andragogy, since both treat the adult learner as an equal, respecting their ideas and opinions, as well as allowing the learner complete autonomy (Lloyd,1972). Using Freire’s method of teaching, adult learners have the opportunity to play a larger role in their education, since students equally determine the dialogue as to what is important to the class by sharing their experiences. By making learning more meaningful, students will engage in dialogue more frequently and retain more of what they have learnt. In this model students are encouraged to look at every issue as problems that have a resolution, not as something they have to accept as reality. Freire’s ideas on the “socialization of students for a more cooperative exchange of information between the teacher and the student” (Freire, 1970), is something I concur with and is also a model that has been applied throughout this Masters of Education program. These fundamental concepts not only gave me a better understanding of the principles of adult learning, but they also presented the idea of transformational learning and helped me to further define my teaching philosophy. Additionally, besides continuing my education in the teaching of ESL and adult learning principles, this paper also gave me much needed experience in writing literature reviews and of research practices studied in the Research Methods in Education course. |
