21st Century Skills; Why this Movie?
From: Authentic Assessment
Final Video: 21st Century Skills I have chosen this artifact to represent authentic assessment predominantly for the relevance video holds today as a medium for teaching, learning, and entertainment, as well as for the possibilities this mode of expression has in pop culture. Moreover, the creation of this video represents areas in my knowledge that were extremely limited or completely nonexistent prior to my experimentation with this medium. So besides being an authentic task, this video could also be considered an assessment of my abilities as a future filmmaker. Additionally, my goal with this project was not to simply consolidate my learning of the course content, but to apply that knowledge through my training in the arts and perhaps provide an different perspective on learning. Other considerations for inclusion as an artifact was the level of difficulty, the number of elements included, and the degree of success the project had. As well, this video crosses each of my themes, as it could be considered an artifact for technology given the number of digital elements in its creation, or it could just as easily illustrate the principles of adult learning, since I taught myself the basics of movie making and the technologies needed to do so. While there were many less time consuming options through which to apply my knowledge of authentic assessment, I chose to make a video with Microsoft Movie Maker primarily because I had used it once before Below is the artifact of my learning, created in Microsoft Movie Maker and then uploaded to YouTube for viewing. This video looks at creative learning through the Arts.

with less than stellar results, and was not yet ready to give up on it. In addition to that this project was also technically challenging, but gave me an opportunity to work in an area of the photographic arts I had been avoiding due to lack of knowledge. As well, this assignment placed me outside of my zone of proximal development (Vygotsky, 1978), requiring me to seek further instruction in the art of knowledge consolidation through the use of video.
With no physical space in which to convene, I looked to my peers and the online community to assist me in the art of movie making. While there were many difficulties and frustrations in the making of this film, I have gained much insight into authentic practices and the role technology plays in the completion of assigned tasks. Although the few films I made prior to this video did not turn out as planned, I learnt a great deal about making videos and even overcame some of the difficulties previously encountered in developing and importing audio files. Despite the fact that technical issues frequently occur and it can be extremely time consuming, technology and authentic assessment are important elements in the attainment of 21st century skills.
